Community Education Class Proposals
Community Education (CE)
CE courses reflect the diverse interests of the Berkeley community. They are funded entirely by student fees. BAS accepts course proposals year round and reviews them twice a year. CE teachers are not required to have California teaching credentials, but must have expertise in the subject matter being taught.
Course Length
Weekday and evening courses may be taught once or twice a week. If Saturday classes are in person, then they are usually the first Saturday of the month. Online Saturday classes may meet any Saturday of the month. Classes may be ongoing or may meet just once a term. Most Community Education courses are 9 weeks or fewer. Student fees are based on hours of instruction.
How to Submit a Proposal for a CE Course
Course proposals are reviewed twice a year, usually in August and February.

- Teachers are to update outlines for the courses they teach each year.
- It is suggested that teachers in similar areas collaborate on their outlines. It is expected that teachers who teach the same course would use the same course outline.
- Only complete the areas that you can answer. (You do not need to complete the coding at the top.)
- Usually a course uses a standard textbook or reader. Supplement the textbook with your own materials as needed.
- CTE courses need to meet the objectives for an industry. Textbooks usually teach the skills toward industry standards.
