As a Berkeley Adult School student, you can improve your English to get a better job, further your education, help your children, or become a US citizen. ESL classes are free.
How to Register
Registration for New Students
1 Fill out a registration. When you register, you will receive an email with a link to take the placement test. Go to this web page and click .
2 Take the ESL Placement Test on your phone, tablet or computer. (Do the test alone, with no help from a friend or your phone.) You will receive an email when we have enrolled you in a class.
Q4: Do I have to take a CASAS test?
A4: Every student takes a CASAS test at the beginning of the year, and again a few months later. The test is one way to see how much you learn. The testing also gives the school money we use to run the school.
New students may come to BAS to register.

How to Attend Class
In Fall 2021, we will have some classes online and some classes in person. You may request either an online or in-person class. If you are not fully vaccinated against covid, we recommend you take an online class.
You can take an online class on your phone, tablet or computer using Zoom. What you need to participate in BAS online classes.
For in-person classes, go directly to the classroom at the start time of the class. For online classes, check your email for a message from your teacher when it is time for you to begin class. The email will have the Zoom link and the exact meeting times.
Morning classes meet MTWThF 8:25am-11:35pm.
Afternoon classes meet MTWThF 12:35pm-3:45pm.
Evening classes meet MTWTh 6:20pm-9:30pm.
Who May Register
Berkeley Adult School English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are for people who live in Berkeley and the surrounding communities. Funding for these classes comes from the State of California. We cannot serve people who live outside of California. We do not ask about your immigration status.
