Register to Learn English (ESL)
As a Berkeley Adult School student, you can improve your English to get a better job, further your education, help your children, or become a US citizen. ESL classes are free.
All ESL classes conducted ONLINE. Classes will NOT meet in person. You will work with your teacher and other students on your phone, tablet, or computer.
Who May Register
Berkeley Adult School English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are for people who live in Berkeley and the surrounding communities. Funding for these classes comes from the State of California. We cannot serve people who live outside of California. We do not ask about your immigration status.
How to Register

2- Take the Placement Test – This will tell you what class will help you the most. Once assigned to a class, the teacher will provide you with the link and instructions within 7 to 10 business days.
3- Get a free Gmail account – A Gmail account is required for ESL class participation. If you need help, your teacher will assist you.
4- Watch the Orientation Video – if you are new to BAS.

How to Attend Class
All ESL classes conducted ONLINE. Classes will NOT meet in person. What you need to participate in BAS distance (online) learning.
Check your email for a message from your teacher when it is time for you to begin class.
You might be able to get free Internet: Free Internet during COVID-19 “Shelter In Place”
Classes meet mornings (Monday – Friday), afternoons (Monday – Friday), and evenings (Monday – Thursday). A teacher will tell each student the exact time of class.
